Stock Return Calculator for Profitable and Unprofitable Buy Prices
Use this calculator to compute and chart the number of profitable or number of unprofitable returns for each buy price of a series of monthly closes for any stock, exchange-traded fund (ETF) and mutual fund listed on a major U.S. stock exchange and supported by Alpha Vantage. Some stocks traded on non-U.S. exchanges are also supported. Indexes are not supported.
The results of the calculator confirm that buying at relatively low prices yields the highest number of profitable returns across all sell prices.
Computational Notes
For a series of N prices there are N-1 buy prices. For example if you had a series of 20 prices, the maximum number of buy prices is 19. For each buy price the number for sell prices is (N - buy price number - 1). For the first price buy price (earliest date) there are 18 sell prices. For the second price there are 17 sell prices. For the next to last buy price there is one sell price.
Each buy and sell price combinations yields a return ((Sell price - buy price) / buy price) * 100 that can be positive (profitable) or equal to or less than zero (unprofitable).
