Recover Investment Loss Calculator

Dealing with losses during the investment process is inevitable. Not all investments become profitable. While losses are usually painful, many can be recovered with time.

Use the Recover Investment Loss Calculator to compute the dollar and percent gain required to recover losses from an initial investment. You can use the calculator to see how long it could take to recover a loss due to a prolonged downside.

The calculator computes the dollar and percent loss amounts given the Initial Value and Last Value. Then it calculates how many years it takes to recover the dollar loss given the Annual Recovery Rate.

The Initial Value is a one-time dollar amount invested or the price paid for the investment. No new investments are made during the recovery period.

The Last Value is the value of the last dollar amount of the investment or its last price.

The Initial Value and Last Value should the same type (investment or price).

The Last Value should be less than the Initial Value to reflect a loss.

The recovery period is the time in years it takes for the Last Value to equal the Initial Value.

The beginning and ending dates of the analysis are not specified in the calculator. The Initial Value and Last Value are not necessarily associated with any particular date. Although their values may reflect specific dates as shown in the following DJIA 1929 Crash example.

DJIA 1929 Crash Example

The DJIA peaked on September 3, 1929 at 381.17 only to fall to a low of 41.22 on July 8, 1932. It took until November 23, 1954 (22+ years) for the DJIA to recovery its 89% loss.

Use the calculator to examine this downside and recovery. Enter 381.17 for the Initial Value, enter 41.22 for the Last Value and enter 10.5 for the Annual Recovery Rate.

Generic Example

Assume you made a $2,000 one-time investment and sometime later it was worth $525. Enter 2000 for the initial value, enter 525 for the last Value and enter 5 for the Annual Rate of Recovery. You can enter different values for the Annual Rate of Recovery for different runs of the calculator.
