Price Upside Means Profitable Returns - Price Downside Means Losses

Buying and selling stocks during a prolonged price upside is the way to make money. And not buying and selling on the price downside is the way to avoid losses.

Below are two stock return maps that show profitable returns in green and unprofitable returns in red. The first map is predominately green; the second map is predominately red.

Map of Price Upside

Brazilian stocks as measured by the Bovespa Index - Ibovespa (^BVSP) have been on a prolonged price upside. The following winners and losers map shows a sea of green, representing profitable investing returns. Over 90 percent of all returns (based on monthly closes) have made money.

Map of Price Downside

Japanese stocks as measured by Japan's Nikkei (^N225) have been on a prolonged price downside since the index peaked in 1989. The following winners and losers map shows a sea of red, representing unprofitable investing returns. Over 70 percent of all returns (based on monthly closes) have not made money.
