Look for Special Dividends
Dividend investors know that regular dividends increase their total returns.
And special dividends add an extra bonus. For instance, Diamond Offshore
(DO), an
offshore oil driller, in addition to its quarterly dividend, has paid
special dividends of $1.50 (March 1, 2006), $4 (March 1, 2007), $1.25
(December 3, 2007) and $1.25 (March 1, 2008). Shareholders benefited from
profits generated from increased drilling due to high energy prices.
Nobel Drilling (NE),
an offshore driller, on April 17, 2008 declared a special cash dividend
of 75 cents per share. The record and payment dates are April 30 and May
16 respectively.
Bassett Furniture (BSET)
on April 3, 2008 declared a special dividend of $1.25 per share with the
record and payment dates to be announced.
