Many Chinese Stocks are Available to U.S. Investors

Investing in the People's Republic of China offers investors the opportunity to participate in one of the world's most rapidly growing economies.

Many Chinese stocks are available to foreigners through exchange-traded funds, American Depository Receipts (ADRs) and mutual funds (not discussed in this article because of their high fees). Four popuar low-fee exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are:

• iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index Fund (FXI) - includes 25 of the largest and most liquid Chinese companies.
• SPDR S&P China (GXC) - includes over 100 Chinese companies.
• PowerShares Golden Dragon Halter USX China (PGJ), based on the Halter USX China Index.
• iShares MSCI Hong Kong (EWH) - based on the Hong Kong Index (^HSI).

Dozens of Chinese ADRs are traded on United States stock exchanges so you can create your own customized China portfolio. The following table lists 37 major Chinese stocks traded on U.S. stock exchanges.

Many of these stocks are speculative so be careful with them.
